Can I place a skip on the road with skip hire Chorley?

We’ve all needed a skip at some point in our lives, right? They are usually commonplace on roads up and down the country as a way of disposing of waste in a safe and effective way. If they’re unable to fit in a garden or driveway, you’ll usually see them on the roads – allowing quick and easy access for the user.

But should they be placed on roads at all? This blog post from Skips Preston tells more…

Is my skip allowed on the road?

Unfortunately, we’re not all blessed with a property that has a big garden or lots of spare land. This means that we often don’t have space for a skip on our private land, and have to improvise. In an ideal world, your skip would be placed in your garden or on your driveway, to ensure that it doesn’t interfere with the everyday lives of others.

However, if this isn’t possible – when hiring a skip in Chorley – your skip can be placed on the road, effectively taking up about the same space as a stationary parked car. By putting the skip on the road, you’re able to quickly reach it with your waste, without it becoming an issue for cars or pedestrians.

Your skip is allowed to be placed on the road, but as it is classed as public land, you will need to receive a permit from your local council first, something that our Chorley skip hire team can assist you with!

How do I receive a permit?

So you’ve decided that you have no choice but to place your skip on the road. That’s perfectly acceptable, but you will need permission from your local council in order to do so. This is needed so that certain rules can be adhered to, ensuring there is minimal risk of accidents. These include:

  • Yellow ends of the skip facing traffic.
  • 4 traffic cones should be placed around the skip on approach.
  • At night, lamps should be attached to the skip so that it is visible on the road.

Skips Preston can put in the hard yards for you when it comes to obtaining a permit, so all you have to worry about is what you’re going to put in your skip! Simply notify us of your intention to put your skip on the roadside when using skip hire in Bolton or elsewhere, and, for a small additional fee, we will go about getting your permit for you.

Where can I put my skip?

Having second thoughts about putting your skip on the roadside? Your driveway or garden could be a better location. We often find that if this is the case, people will use pallets or other materials to provide a smooth surface for the skip to lay on, ensuring no damage to the grass or concrete below. It’s also worth noting that our Bolton skip hire team need to be able to safely drop and lift the skip using our vehicle, so if your road is tight on space, you should consider where the most effective location will be.
